Ezekiel 1:6

וְאַרְבָּעָ֥ה פָנִ֖ים לְאֶחָ֑ת וְאַרְבַּ֥ע כְּנָפַ֖יִם לְאַחַ֥ת לָהֶֽם׃

And four faces to each one, and four wings to each one of them.

Morphology

  1. וְאַרְבָּעָה (ve-arbaʿah) – Root: ארבע; Form: Conjunction + cardinal numeral masculine singular absolute; Translation: “and four”; Notes: The masculine form agrees with פָנִים (“faces”), which though plural is grammatically masculine.
  2. פָנִים (panim) – Root: פנה; Form: Noun masculine plural (plural of form only, always plural in usage); Translation: “faces”; Notes: Plural of appearance; often used idiomatically for “face.”
  3. לְאֶחָת (le-eḥat) – Root: אחד; Form: Preposition לְ + numeral feminine singular; Translation: “to each one”; Notes: Feminine here corresponds to חַיָּה (living creature, feminine). Indicates distribution: each creature had four faces.
  4. וְאַרְבַּע (ve-arbaʿ) – Root: ארבע; Form: Conjunction + cardinal numeral feminine singular; Translation: “and four”; Notes: Feminine form here agrees with כְּנָפַיִם (“wings,” dual feminine form).
  5. כְּנָפַיִם (kenafayim) – Root: כנף; Form: Noun feminine dual absolute; Translation: “wings”; Notes: Dual ending -ַיִם; specifies exactly two wings per side, thus four per creature.
  6. לְאַחַת (le-aḥat) – Root: אחד; Form: Preposition לְ + numeral feminine singular; Translation: “to each one”; Notes: As with לְאֶחָת earlier, agrees with the feminine collective noun for creatures.
  7. לָהֶם (la-hem) – Root: הם; Form: Preposition לְ + third person masculine plural pronominal suffix; Translation: “to them”; Notes: Refers back to the living creatures; masculine plural suffix is common for mixed or general groups, even if the word חַיּוֹת is grammatically feminine.
