Ezekiel 32:7

וְכִסֵּיתִ֤י בְכַבֹּֽותְךָ֙ שָׁמַ֔יִם וְהִקְדַּרְתִּ֖י אֶת־כֹּֽכְבֵיהֶ֑ם שֶׁ֚מֶשׁ בֶּעָנָ֣ן אֲכַסֶּ֔נּוּ וְיָרֵ֖חַ לֹא־יָאִ֥יר אֹורֹֽו׃

And I will cover the heavens with your smoke, and I will darken their stars; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not make its light shine.

Morphology

  1. וְכִסֵּיתִי (ve-kisseyti) – Root: כסָה (kasah); Form: Piel perfect 1st person common singular with prefixed conjunction וְ; Translation: “And I will cover”; Notes: The Piel stem intensifies the action, indicating complete concealment or envelopment.
  2. בְכַבֹּתְךָ (be-kabbotekha) – Root: כָּבָה (kabah); Form: Preposition בְ + noun feminine singular construct with suffix 2nd person masculine singular; Translation: “with your smoke”; Notes: Derived from a root meaning “to extinguish” or “to burn out,” here referring to the rising smoke of destruction or downfall.
  3. שָׁמַיִם (shamayim) – Root: שָׁמַיִם (shamayim); Form: Noun masculine plural (dual form by morphology); Translation: “heavens”; Notes: Represents the celestial sphere that will be obscured by divine judgment imagery.
  4. וְהִקְדַּרְתִּי (ve-hikdartti) – Root: קדר (qadar); Form: Hifil perfect 1st person common singular with prefixed conjunction וְ; Translation: “and I will darken”; Notes: The Hifil form makes the verb causative, meaning YHWH causes darkness to spread over the stars.
  5. אֶת־ (ʾet) – Root: את (ʾet); Form: Direct object marker; Translation: “(marks the direct object)”; Notes: Introduces the object “their stars.”
  6. כֹּכְבֵיהֶם (kokhvehem) – Root: כּוֹכָב (kokhav); Form: Noun masculine plural construct with suffix 3rd person masculine plural; Translation: “their stars”; Notes: Refers to celestial bodies belonging to the heavens; their darkening symbolizes total cosmic disorder.
  7. שֶׁמֶשׁ (shemesh) – Root: שֶׁמֶשׁ (shemesh); Form: Noun common masculine singular; Translation: “the sun”; Notes: A primary light-bearer, now to be obscured, reinforcing imagery of divine eclipse and judgment.
  8. בֶּעָנָן (be-ʿanan) – Root: עָנָן (ʿanan); Form: Preposition בְּ + definite noun masculine singular; Translation: “with a cloud”; Notes: The cloud serves as the instrument of concealment.
  9. אֲכַסֶּנּוּ (ʾakhassenu) – Root: כסָה (kasah); Form: Piel imperfect 1st person common singular with suffix 3rd person masculine singular; Translation: “I will cover it”; Notes: Refers to the act of concealing the sun; the suffix “it” relates back to the sun.
  10. וְיָרֵחַ (ve-yareach) – Root: ירֵחַ (yareach); Form: Conjunction וְ + noun masculine singular; Translation: “and the moon”; Notes: Another major luminary affected by this darkening judgment.
  11. לֹא (lo) – Root: לא (lo); Form: Negative particle; Translation: “not”; Notes: Negates the following verb.
  12. יָאִיר (yaʾir) – Root: אור (ʾor); Form: Hifil imperfect 3rd person masculine singular; Translation: “shall shine”; Notes: Denotes the action of emitting light; here, the moon fails to do so.
  13. אֹורֹו (ʾoro) – Root: אור (ʾor); Form: Noun masculine singular with suffix 3rd person masculine singular; Translation: “its light”; Notes: Refers to the moon’s radiance, extinguished as part of the cosmic imagery of judgment.
