Morphology

  1. וַיהוָה (va-YHWH) – Root: יהוה (YHWH); Form: Conjunction וְ + proper divine name; Translation: “And YHWH”; Notes: The conjunction continues from the previous verse, emphasizing YHWH’s identity as the same divine being who spoke with Yaʿaqov at Bethel.
  2. אֱלֹהֵי (Elohei) – Root: אלהים (Elohim); Form: Noun masculine plural construct; Translation: “God of”; Notes: A genitive construct referring to possession or mastery—YHWH is the supreme commander over the “hosts” (armies or celestial powers).
  3. הַצְּבָאֹות (ha-tzevaʾot) – Root: צבא (tzevaʾ); Form: Definite noun masculine plural; Translation: “the hosts” or “the armies”; Notes: Refers to both heavenly (angelic) and earthly armies under divine command—expresses YHWH’s universal sovereignty and might.
  4. יְהוָה (YHWH) – Root: יהוה (YHWH); Form: Proper divine name; Translation: “YHWH”; Notes: Repetition serves to highlight the covenantal name, recalling the self-revelation at Sinai and emphasizing His eternal constancy.
  5. זִכְרֹו (zikhrō) – Root: זכר (zakhar); Form: Noun masculine singular construct + suffix 3ms; Translation: “His memorial” or “His remembrance”; Notes: Denotes the way by which YHWH is to be remembered and invoked—His name itself (*YHWH*) stands as the perpetual sign of His covenant and faithfulness.
