Morphology

  1. אֱלֹהֵי (ʾElohei) – Root: אלה (ʾ-l-h); Root Type: III-He; Form: Noun masculine plural in form, singular in meaning, construct (state: construct); Translation: “God of”; Notes: The construct form links God with the following noun, expressing “the God of…” rather than an independent noun.
  2. חַסְדּוֹ (ḥasdo) – Root: חסד (ḥ-s-d); Root Type: Strong; Form: Noun masculine singular + suffix 3rd person masculine singular; Translation: “his steadfast love”; Notes: Ḥesed denotes covenant loyalty, steadfast love, or faithful kindness. The Masoretic Text reads “his steadfast love,” although many Hebrew manuscripts and ancient versions read “my steadfast love.”
  3. יְקַדְּמֵנִי (yeqaddemeni) – Root: קדם (q-d-m); Root Type: Strong; Binyan: Piel; Form: Yiqtol (imperfect) 3rd person masculine singular + suffix 1st person common singular; Translation: “will go before me”; Notes: The intensive Piel expresses God’s action of meeting or going before the psalmist in advance.
  4. אֱלֹהִים (ʾElohim) – Root: אלה (ʾ-l-h); Root Type: III-He; Form: Noun masculine plural in form, functioning as a singular proper designation; Translation: “God”; Notes: Although plural in form, it refers to the one God of Yisraʾel.
  5. יַרְאֵנִי (yarʾeni) – Root: ראה (r-ʾ-h); Root Type: III-He; Binyan: Hifil; Form: Yiqtol (imperfect) 3rd person masculine singular + suffix 1st person common singular; Translation: “will cause me to see”; Notes: The Hifil is causative. In this context it means that God will enable the psalmist to look upon the defeat of his enemies.
  6. בְשֹׁרְרָי (ve-shorerai) – Root: שורר (š-r-r); Root Type: Geminate; Form: Preposition בְּ + noun masculine plural + suffix 1st person common singular; Translation: “upon my enemies”; Notes: The preposition בְּ following verbs of seeing commonly has the sense “look upon” or “look with satisfaction upon.” The noun refers to hostile adversaries.
