Morphology

  1. חַטַּאת־פִּימוֹ (ḥattaʾt-pimo) – Root: חטא (ḥ-ṭ-ʾ); Root Type: III-Guttural (א); Form: Noun feminine singular construct (state: construct) + noun masculine singular + suffix 3rd person masculine plural; Translation: “The sin of their mouth”; Notes: The construct chain identifies the mouth as the source of their sin. The suffix on פִּימוֹ is the poetic equivalent of the regular 3mp possessive.
  2. דְּבַר־שְׂפָתֵימוֹ (devar-sefateimo) – Root: דבר (d-b-r); Root Type: Strong; Form: Noun masculine singular construct (state: construct) + noun feminine plural construct (state: construct) + suffix 3rd person masculine plural; Translation: “The word of their lips”; Notes: A second construct chain placed in apposition to the previous phrase, explaining that their sinful speech consists in the words spoken by their lips.
  3. וְיִלָּכְדוּ (ve-yillakhedu) – Root: לכד (l-k-d); Root Type: Strong; Binyan: Nifal; Form: Conjunction וְ + yiqtol (jussive sense) 3rd person masculine plural; Translation: “So let them be caught”; Notes: Although formally an imperfect, it functions here as a jussive expressing the psalmist’s imprecation.
  4. בִגְאֹונָם (vigʾonam) – Root: גאה (g-ʾ-h); Root Type: III-He; Form: Preposition בְּ + noun masculine singular + suffix 3rd person masculine plural; Translation: “In their pride”; Notes: The preposition indicates the sphere or cause in which they are ensnared.
  5. וּמֵאָלָה (u-meʾalah) – Root: אלה (ʾ-l-h); Root Type: III-He; Form: Conjunction וְ + preposition מִן + noun feminine singular; Translation: “And because of the curse”; Notes: Refers to the curses or oaths that proceed from the mouths of the wicked.
  6. וּמִכַּחַשׁ (u-mikkaḥash) – Root: כחשׁ (k-ḥ-sh); Root Type: Strong; Form: Conjunction וְ + preposition מִן + noun masculine singular; Translation: “And because of the deceit”; Notes: Denotes falsehood, deception, or lying that characterizes their speech.
  7. יְסַפֵּרוּ (yesapperu) – Root: ספר (s-p-r); Root Type: Strong; Binyan: Piel; Form: Yiqtol (imperfect) 3rd person masculine plural; Translation: “They recount”; Notes: Refers to the continual utterance or proclamation of curses and deceit by the wicked.
