Jeremiah 23:31

הִנְנִ֥י עַל־הַנְּבִיאִ֖ם נְאֻם־יְהוָ֑ה הַלֹּקְחִ֣ים לְשֹׁונָ֔ם וַֽיִּנְאֲמ֖וּ נְאֻֽם׃

Behold, I am against the prophets,” declares YHWH, “those who take their tongue and declare, ‘Declaration.’

Morphology

  1. הִנְנִ֥י (hineni) – Root: הנה; Form: Interjection with 1st person singular suffix; Translation: “Behold, I”; Notes: Expresses personal emphasis, often in divine speech.
  2. עַל־הַנְּבִיאִ֖ם (ʿal-ha-neviʾim) – Root: נבא; Form: Preposition עַל + definite masculine plural noun; Translation: “against the prophets”; Notes: Marks YHWH’s opposition to specific false prophets.
  3. נְאֻם־יְהוָ֑ה (neʾum-YHWH) – Root: נאם; Form: Construct noun + divine name; Translation: “declares YHWH”; Notes: Standard formula indicating prophetic utterance.
  4. הַלֹּקְחִ֣ים (ha-loqḥim) – Root: לקח; Form: Definite article + Qal participle masculine plural; Translation: “those who take”; Notes: Refers to ongoing or repeated action.
  5. לְשֹׁונָ֔ם (le-shonam) – Root: לשׁן; Form: Preposition לְ + noun feminine singular with 3rd person masculine plural suffix; Translation: “their tongue”; Notes: Possibly idiomatic—referring to using one’s speech presumptuously.
  6. וַיִּנְאֲמ֖וּ (vayyinʾamu) – Root: נאם; Form: Nifal wayyiqtol 3rd person masculine plural; Translation: “and they declare”; Notes: Reflexive/passive nuance—claiming to speak or utter divine declarations.
  7. נְאֻם (neʾum) – Root: נאם; Form: Noun masculine singular; Translation: “declaration”; Notes: Repetition of the prophetic term, likely mimicking divine speech formula without authorization.
