וַתַּשְׁק֥וּ אֶת־הַנְּזִרִ֖ים יָ֑יִן וְעַל־הַנְּבִיאִים֙ צִוִּיתֶ֣ם לֵאמֹ֔ר לֹ֖א תִּנָּבְאֽוּ׃

“And you made the Nezirim drink wine, and to the prophets you commanded, saying, ‘Do not prophesy.’

Morphology

  1. וַתַּשְׁק֥וּ (va-tashqu) – Root: שׁקה; Form: Conjunction + Hiphil imperfect 2nd person masculine plural (converted to past by waw-consecutive); Translation: “And you made [them] drink”; Notes: Causative action — the people compelled the Nazirites to violate their vow by drinking wine.
  2. אֶת־הַנְּזִרִ֖ים (ʾet-ha-nezīrim) – Root: נזר; Form: Direct object marker + definite noun masculine plural; Translation: “the Nazirites”; Notes: Refers to those consecrated to YHWH, who had vowed abstinence from wine and impurity.
  3. יָ֑יִן (yayin) – Root: יין; Form: Noun masculine singular; Translation: “wine”; Notes: Symbol of the temptation to abandon consecration and holiness.
  4. וְעַל־הַנְּבִיאִים֙ (ve-ʿal-ha-neviʾim) – Root: נבא; Form: Conjunction + preposition עַל + definite noun masculine plural; Translation: “and against the prophets”; Notes: Denotes opposition and suppression of the prophetic voice.
  5. צִוִּיתֶ֣ם (tsivvītem) – Root: צוה; Form: Piel perfect 2nd person masculine plural; Translation: “you commanded”; Notes: The intensive stem (Piel) underscores the forcefulness of the prohibition imposed by the people on YHWH’s messengers.
  6. לֵאמֹ֔ר (leʾmor) – Root: אמר; Form: Preposition לְ + infinitive construct; Translation: “saying”; Notes: Introduces direct speech following the verb “command.”
  7. לֹ֖א (lo) – Root: —; Form: Negative particle; Translation: “not”; Notes: Negates the following verb, indicating prohibition.
  8. תִּנָּבְאֽוּ׃ (tinnaveʾu) – Root: נבא; Form: Nifal imperfect 2nd person masculine plural; Translation: “you shall prophesy” (negated: “Do not prophesy”); Notes: Nifal here functions as a reflexive-passive, meaning “to act as a prophet.” The prohibition reveals resistance to divine revelation.
