Isaiah 40:25

וְאֶל־מִ֥י תְדַמְּי֖וּנִי וְאֶשְׁוֶ֑ה יֹאמַ֖ר קָדֹֽושׁ׃

And to whom will you liken Me, that I should be equal? says the Holy One.

Morphology

  1. וְאֶל־מִ֥י (veʾel-mi) – Root: מי; Form: Conjunction + preposition + interrogative pronoun; Translation: “And to whom”; Notes: Introduces a rhetorical question.
  2. תְדַמְּי֖וּנִי (tedammeyuni) – Root: דמה; Form: Piel imperfect 2nd person masculine plural + 1st person singular suffix; Translation: “will you liken Me”; Notes: Piel intensifies the meaning: to make something appear similar.
  3. וְאֶשְׁוֶ֑ה (veʾeshveh) – Root: שוה; Form: Qal imperfect 1st person singular; Translation: “and I should be equal”; Notes: Continues the rhetorical challenge of comparison.
  4. יֹאמַ֖ר (yomar) – Root: אמר; Form: Qal imperfect 3rd person masculine singular; Translation: “says”; Notes: Prophetic speech formula, though future form, used here with present force.
  5. קָדֹֽושׁ (qadosh) – Root: קדש; Form: Adjective, masculine singular; Translation: “the Holy One”; Notes: A divine epithet, often used as a title for YHWH in Isaiah.
