Morphology

  1. כִּֽי־ (ki) – Root: כי; Form: Conjunction; Translation: “For”; Notes: Introduces a reason or explanation; joined by maqqef to the following word but analyzed here as its own token.
  2. הִנֵּה (hinneh) – Root: הנה; Form: Deictic particle; Translation: “behold”; Notes: Signals emphatic attention to what follows, common in prophetic declarations.
  3. קָטֹן (qaton) – Root: קטן; Form: Adjective masculine singular, predicate; Translation: “small”; Notes: Functions predicatively before the verb, setting the resultant state (“small [have I made you]”).
  4. נְתַתִּיךָ (netattikha) – Root: נתן; Form: Qal perfect 1st person common singular + 2nd masculine singular pronominal object suffix; Translation: “I have made you / I have given you [to be]”; Notes: נתן with an object can mean “to appoint/make (someone)” in a state; here “I have made you” conveys divinely effected status.
  5. בַּגֹּויִם (ba-goyim) – Root: גוי; Form: Preposition בְּ + definite article + noun masculine plural (“in/among the nations”); Translation: “among the nations”; Notes: The vowel pointing is preserved exactly as given; semantically locative-distributive (“in the sphere of the nations”).
  6. בָּז֖וּי (bazui) – Root: בזה; Form: Qal passive participle masculine singular; Translation: “despised”; Notes: Predicate participle expressing resultant state parallel to “small”; supplies the second predicate without an explicit copula.
  7. בָּאָדָם׃ (ba-’adam) – Root: אדם; Form: Preposition בְּ + definite noun masculine singular (collective); Translation: “among mankind”; Notes: Collective “’adam” denotes humankind generically; reinforces the breadth of contempt.
