Ezekiel 40:12

וּגְב֞וּל לִפְנֵ֤י הַתָּאֹות֙ אַמָּ֣ה אֶחָ֔ת וְאַמָּה־אַחַ֥ת גְּב֖וּל מִפֹּ֑ה וְהַתָּ֕א שֵׁשׁ־אַמֹּ֣ות מִפֹּ֔ו וְשֵׁ֥שׁ אַמֹּ֖ות מִפֹּֽו׃

And a border before the chambers, one cubit, and one cubit was the border on this side; and the chamber was six cubits on that side, and six cubits on that side.

Morphology

  1. וּגְב֞וּל (u-gevul) – Root: גבול (gevul); Form: Conjunction וְ + noun masculine singular absolute; Translation: “and a border”; Notes: Refers to a structural boundary or partition separating sections of the gate or chambers.
  2. לִפְנֵי (lifnei) – Root: פנה (panah); Form: Preposition לְ + construct form of noun “face” (פנים); Translation: “before”; Notes: Indicates position—“in front of” or “facing.”

  4. אַמָּה (ʾammāh) – Root: אמה (ʾammāh); Form: Noun feminine singular absolute; Translation: “a cubit”; Notes: Measurement unit equal to approximately 45–52 cm.
  5. אֶחָת (eḥat) – Root: אחד (ʾeḥad); Form: Numeral feminine singular; Translation: “one”; Notes: Describes the thickness or width of the boundary.
  6. וְאַמָּה־אַחַת (ve-ʾammāh aḥat) – Root: אמה (ʾammāh); Form: Conjunction וְ + noun feminine singular absolute + numeral feminine singular; Translation: “and one cubit”; Notes: Repeats for the opposite side, indicating symmetry in design.
  7. גְּבוּל (gevul) – Root: גבול (gevul); Form: Noun masculine singular absolute; Translation: “border”; Notes: Used again to describe the second partition mirroring the first one.
  8. מִפֹּה (mippōh) – Root: פה (pōh); Form: Preposition מִן + adverb; Translation: “on this side”; Notes: Indicates spatial location relative to the chamber’s orientation.
  9. וְהַתָּא (ve-ha-ta) – Root: תא (taʾ); Form: Conjunction וְ + definite noun masculine singular; Translation: “and the chamber”; Notes: Refers to one of the individual guardrooms or side rooms in the gate structure.
  10. שֵׁשׁ־אַמֹּות (shesh ʾammōt) – Root: שׁשׁ (shesh); Form: Numeral feminine singular construct + noun feminine plural; Translation: “six cubits”; Notes: Measurement of each chamber’s width.
  11. מִפֹּו (mippō) – Root: פה (pōh); Form: Preposition מִן + adverb; Translation: “on that side”; Notes: Completes the symmetry formula—each side identical in dimension.
  12. וְשֵׁשׁ (ve-shesh) – Root: שׁשׁ (shesh); Form: Conjunction וְ + numeral feminine singular; Translation: “and six”; Notes: Reiterates the matching dimension of the opposing chamber.
  13. אַמֹּות (ʾammōt) – Root: אמה (ʾammāh); Form: Noun feminine plural; Translation: “cubits”; Notes: The standard measurement unit, again emphasizing proportional balance.
  14. מִפֹּו (mippō) – Root: פה (pōh); Form: Preposition מִן + adverb; Translation: “on that side”; Notes: Final repetition confirming architectural symmetry between both sides of the chambers.
