Ezekiel 44:4

וַיְבִיאֵ֜נִי דֶּֽרֶךְ־שַׁ֣עַר הַצָּפֹון֮ אֶל־פְּנֵ֣י הַבַּיִת֒ וָאֵ֕רֶא וְהִנֵּ֛ה מָלֵ֥א כְבֹוד־יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה וָאֶפֹּ֖ל אֶל־פָּנָֽי׃

And he brought me by the way of the northern gate to the front of the house, and I saw, and behold, the glory of YHWH filled the house of YHWH, and I fell on my face.

Morphology

  1. וַיְבִיאֵנִי (va-yeviʾeni) – Root: בוא (bo); Form: Hifil wayyiqtol (narrative past) 3rd person masculine singular + suffix 1st person common singular; Translation: “And he brought me”; Notes: The causative stem emphasizes that the prophet is being led under divine direction by his guide.
  2. דֶּרֶךְ־שַׁעַר (derekh-shaʿar) – Root: דרך (darakh) / שער (shaʿar); Form: Construct chain: noun masculine singular construct + noun masculine singular absolute; Translation: “by the way of the gate”; Notes: Indicates the route taken — through the northern gate of the temple complex.
  3. הַצָּפֹון (ha-tsafon) – Root: צפן (tsafan); Form: Definite noun masculine singular; Translation: “the north”; Notes: Specifies direction — the northern gate is significant in temple orientation symbolism.
  4. אֶל־פְּנֵי (el-penei) – Root: פנה (panah); Form: Preposition אֶל + construct form noun; Translation: “to the front of” or “before”; Notes: Marks spatial relation — the prophet stands before the temple façade.
  5. הַבַּיִת (ha-bayit) – Root: בית (bayit); Form: Definite noun masculine singular; Translation: “the house”; Notes: Refers to the temple — the dwelling place of YHWH’s presence in the vision.
  6. וָאֵרֶא (va-ʾere) – Root: ראה (raʾah); Form: Qal wayyiqtol (narrative past) 1st person common singular; Translation: “and I saw”; Notes: Marks the prophet’s visionary perception — the climax of divine revelation in this sequence.
  7. וְהִנֵּה (ve-hinne) – Root: —; Form: Interjection + conjunction וְ; Translation: “and behold”; Notes: Introduces astonishment — highlighting what Ezekiel witnesses next.
  8. מָלֵא (male) – Root: מלא (maleʾ); Form: Qal perfect 3rd person masculine singular; Translation: “filled”; Notes: Describes the completed act of divine glory filling the temple interior.
  9. כְבֹוד־יְהוָה (kevōd-YHWH) – Root: כבד (kavad); Form: Noun masculine singular construct + divine name; Translation: “the glory of YHWH”; Notes: Refers to the visible manifestation of YHWH’s presence — the Shekhinah returning to the temple.
  10. אֶת־בֵּית (et-beit) – Root: בית (bayit); Form: Direct object marker + noun masculine singular construct; Translation: “the house of”; Notes: Marks the temple as the direct object of the verb “filled.”
  11. יְהוָה (YHWH) – Root: היה (hayah); Form: Proper divine name; Translation: “YHWH”; Notes: Repetition of the divine name emphasizes that the fullness of glory belongs solely to YHWH.
  12. וָאֶפֹּל (va-ʾeppol) – Root: נפל (nafal); Form: Qal wayyiqtol (narrative past) 1st person common singular; Translation: “and I fell”; Notes: Reflects the prophet’s reaction — prostration in awe before divine majesty.
  13. אֶל־פָּנָי (el-panai) – Root: פנה (panah); Form: Preposition אֶל + noun masculine plural in construct + 1st person common singular suffix; Translation: “upon my face”; Notes: Idiomatic expression of reverence and submission before YHWH’s overwhelming presence.
